Breast Health is an important part of overall wellness. Early detection from disease is critical to ensure the chances of successful treatment. At North Dandenong clinic, we can assist you with breast examinations and refer you to breast cancer screening in the form of mammograms.
What to Expect During a Breast Health Check
A breast health examination at North Dandenong clinic will be conducted by one of our doctors at the North Dandenong Clinic. They will ensure that you are made to feel as comfortable as possible and can discuss any concerns you may have. During the breast check-up, your breasts will be examined and if necessary, a mammogram will be recommended.
What is a Mammogram ?
In many cases, a physical breast examination will take place. However, there may be smaller changes in the breast tissue that cannot be identified from a physical check. A mammogram is used in this instance, as it is a specialised x-ray that can detect small changes in the breast tissue. The machine compresses each breast one at a time, and takes images that can be analysed by a radiologist.
We suggest you have a mammogram every two years. There are age guidelines as follows :
- Breast Screen Victoria provides free breast screening for women who do not have symptoms of cancer. The screening is provided for women between the ages of 50-74, as this is the age group most commonly affected by breast cancer.
- For women aged between 40-50 and over 75, discuss your needs with one of our doctors who can advise you on the best way forward.
- A mammogram for women under the age of 40 is not effective, as the breast tissue is too dense to be identified by the X-rays. However, should you notice any changes to your breasts, contact our reception to book an appointment so that any issues can be identified and diagnosed early.
Understanding the Risks and Benefits of Screening
One of the risks of Breast Cancer Screening is that mammograms can involve exposure to a low dose of radiation. It’s important to note that the benefits of early detection far outweigh the risks for most women. Statistics show that one in 7 women will get breast cancer and most of these women will not have a family history of the disease.
If additional testing over and above a mammogram is required, our doctors may recommend either an Ultrasound or a biopsy. A biopsy is when a small sample of breast tissue is taken for further observation by a specialist. Early detection of breast cancer may improve the opportunities for positive outcomes.
Our doctors will guide you through the process every step of the way and be able to answer any questions that you may have.
Promoting Breast Health at Home
In addition to scheduled breast health check-ups in our North Dandenong clinic, we recommend you regularly perform monthly self-examinations of your own breasts. Should you notice any difference in the size or shape, feel any lumps or are experiencing any pain, please make an appointment with our North Dandenong clinic.
Pink October – Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Wear a pink ribbon in October to highlight the importance of Breast Cancer Screening. During the month, it’s a time to come together and raise awareness of the importance of women’s health and in particular breast checks. Schedule an appointment at North Dandenong Clinic, and you’ll be making a significant difference to your future health and well-being.
